This is not a question that slogans can settle.
By the autumn of 2026, the line has moved from forum bait to a serious argument. On one side is 25-year-old Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut, still inside a title window with Vitality. On the other is 28-year-old Oleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev, once the face of the NAVI dynasty and, since 28 July 2025, the centerpiece of BC.Game. One has turned individual awards into a record book. The other wrote the CS:GO myth into the game itself.
Leave the emotion out of it first. GOAT is not “who is cooler,” “who has the better clip,” or “who has the better teammates right now.” It has to answer at least four things at once: individual honors, team results, peak, and longevity across versions.
On that ledger, checked against HLTV through 27 September 2026, ZywOo is already ahead. Peak and myth are the part this column does not close.
1. The résumés, without the poetry
ZywOo (Vitality since 2018)
- HLTV No. 1: four times (2019, 2020, 2023, 2025). That is the record.
- HLTV Top 20: every year from 2019 to 2025. Never outside the top three. In 2024 he finished 3rd behind donk. The 2026 list is not published yet.
- Majors: three titles (Paris 2023, Austin 2025, Budapest 2025) and three Major MVPs, also a record.
- HLTV MVPs: 33. Big Event MVPs: 26, one past s1mple (14) and device (11) combined.
- ESL Grand Slam: two. The second was completed at IEM Rio 2026.
- 2025: eight MVPs, all at Big Events, tying s1mple’s 2021 single-year MVP record. Only four of s1mple’s eight that year were Big Events.
- 2026 through 27 September: Vitality titles at IEM Krakow, PGL Cluj-Napoca, BLAST Open Rotterdam, IEM Rio, BLAST Rivals 2026 Season 1, and StarSeries Fall. ZywOo’s own medals in that run are Krakow, Cluj-Napoca, Rio, BLAST Rivals, and StarSeries Fall. Rotterdam’s medal went to ropz. Exit in the quarter-finals of the IEM Cologne Major.
s1mple (Liquid / NAVI peak; BC.Game since 28 July 2025)
- HLTV No. 1: three times (2018, 2021, 2022).
- HLTV Top 20: eight straight years, 2016–2023. He was 7th in 2023, not inside the top three that year.
- Majors: one title (Stockholm 2021), won without dropping a map, plus the Major MVP. Runner-up at London 2018 and Antwerp 2022.
- HLTV MVPs: 21. Big Event MVPs: 14. Career total for device, for the comparison below: 19 MVPs, 11 of them Big Events.
- Intel Grand Slam: one.
- 2018 is still widely treated as one of the greatest individual CS:GO seasons ever played.
- CS2 era: stepped away on 26 October 2023. Loan to Falcons from 27 September to 21 November 2024. Loan to FaZe from 5 May to 9 July 2025, including an Austin Major quarter-final. Left NAVI on 28 July 2025. No S-tier title in the CS2 era on the public results list.
The hard comparison, snapshot 27 September 2026:
| Category | ZywOo | s1mple |
|---|---|---|
| HLTV No. 1 | 4 | 3 |
| HLTV Top 20 years | 7 (2019–2025; 2026 list not out) | 8 (2016–2023) |
| Major titles | 3 | 1 |
| Major MVPs | 3 | 1 |
| HLTV MVPs | 33 | 21 |
| Big Event MVPs | 26 | 14 |
| Grand Slam | 2 | 1 |
| CS2 elite titles | Many, including 2 Majors | 0 |
Numbers are not the whole argument. They are no longer ambiguous, either. If the debate is a trophy case, ZywOo is already ahead.
The crosshairs and configs are a different page from the trophy case.
2. What the GOAT debate is actually about
Individual honors: ZywOo has rewritten the ledger
HLTV Player of the Year is not a popularity contest. It is a year-long weighting of results, opposition, and stage. Four No. 1 finishes means ZywOo was judged the best player on earth in four separate seasons. Three already made s1mple a legend. Falling one behind changes the scale.
The MVP gap is blunter. HLTV’s own ladder at PGL Cluj-Napoca 2026 already read ZywOo 30 (23 Big Events), s1mple 21 (14), device 19 (11). Rio made the Frenchman 31, BLAST Rivals Season 1 made him 32. StarSeries Fall, reported from that same medal count on 20 September 2026, took it to 33 career MVPs and 26 at Big Events — one past s1mple and device combined. That is not just “good team, easy medals.” HLTV MVPs track individual impact. ZywOo has repeatedly been the highest-rated player in finals and against top sides. Rotterdam is the exception that proves the teammates are real: ropz took that medal, the first Vitality MVP that was not ZywOo.
The counter is fair: a large share of s1mple’s 21 medals came in a different CS:GO ecosystem, with fewer true superteams and more nights when he had to drag a roster. Even after that discount, 33 MVPs and three Major MVPs are not a rounding error.
Team success: Majors remain the supreme court
In Counter-Strike, Majors still outweigh everything else. Longest format. Highest pressure. Cleanest historical marker.
s1mple waited years for his. Stockholm 2021 ended the “best player without a Major” argument in the most emphatic way possible: NAVI went undefeated, and he was MVP. That tournament is the peak of his career story.
ZywOo’s path is different. Home Major in Paris 2023, MVP included. Then Austin and Budapest in 2025, back-to-back, MVP both times. Nobody had won consecutive Major MVPs since coldzera in 2016.
Cologne 2026 matters because it cuts the other way. Vitality did not three-peat. They went out in the quarter-finals. Falcons won the Major, and m0NESY took his first Major MVP. Two things can be true at once: ZywOo is not untouchable, and his Major résumé (3 titles, 3 MVPs) is still a generation ahead of s1mple’s (1 and 1).
The “Vitality carries him” objection is half right. ropz, flameZ, mezii, and apEX raise the floor. A stacked roster inflates title counts. It does not automatically hand out three Major MVPs. And s1mple’s 2021 NAVI was not a charity case. electronic, Perfecto, b1t, and Boombl4 were a top-tier core.
The real difference is this: ZywOo turned elite rosters into sustained championship gravity. After CS2, s1mple never found another title structure that could keep up with him.
Peak versus longevity: the actual fracture line
This is where s1mple’s case still lives.
The 2018 version of s1mple is, for a lot of people, the ceiling of what the game has looked like. Aggression, AWP feel, clutch invention, presence. Stats only describe part of it. Stockholm 2021 then planted that ceiling on the biggest stage. The falling no-scope on Cache became in-game graffiti. ZywOo still does not have a cultural object on that level.
ZywOo’s greatness is a different species: seven years without leaving the world top three; best in CS:GO; still best after CS2 changed the round count, the engine, the utility, and the map pool. He won Player of the Year as a rookie in 2019, lost the 2024 crown to donk, then took it back in 2025 with a historic season. That ability to drop and climb again is something s1mple has not shown since 2023.
A clean split:
- Single-year ceiling: many serious fans still put s1mple 2018 / 2021 in the top drawer.
- Seven-year baseline: ZywOo is clearly higher.
- Version change: ZywOo wins outright. On 5 October 2023 s1mple posted that anyone chasing a CS2 pro career still had three months, and told them not to play “this shit game” until the updates landed. He benched himself later that month. In a 2024 interview he said a patch had fixed the peeker’s advantage and made the AWP easier. The career fact that remains is the gap in titles, not one tweet. ZywOo treated the new game as home turf.
If GOAT means the most insane year, s1mple still has a vote. If GOAT means the more complete career when you unroll the whole tape, the vote moves to France.
Head-to-head in 2026
They have barely met in CS2. IEM Krakow 2026 was the first collision in about two and a half years, and the first since Gamers8 in August 2023: Vitality 2-0. Reported direct duels were 7-3 to ZywOo. HLTV Rating 3.0 was 1.13 to 1.07. flameZ led the server at 1.65. The duel went to France. The series was a roster win.
At IEM Atlanta they met again, in a group-stage series, not a final. Vitality won 2-0. Direct duels were 5-5. ZywOo’s series rating was 1.52. s1mple’s was 1.18, and on Dust2 he posted 1.62. NAVI won the tournament; w0nderful was the event MVP.
That does not settle a career. The team gap is too large. It only settles the present: in 2026, on stages that still matter, ZywOo is the player who can pin a match down. s1mple can still produce the map. He cannot currently drag his roster through a series against a true contender.
The pairing still draws a crowd when both names are on the server. The myth is intact. The scoreline is not.
3. Why the argument is not over
This is not just “haters ignoring stats.” Some of the resistance is real.
Story and personality. s1mple is a protagonist: early controversy, the move to North America, homesickness, years of Major near-misses, then Stockholm. He gets angry. He talks. He will say the game is trash. ZywOo plays like a precision instrument: stable, restrained, low drama. Esports audiences reward narrative. Even with a heavier trophy case, ZywOo still does not occupy the same popular-culture slot.
Roster quality. This is the most common deduction. Vitality were a first-table team from 2023 through 2026 and looked like a dynasty in 2025. The s1mple case says farming MVPs next to four world-class teammates is not the same as carrying Liquid or early NAVI into Astralis’s wall. Partly true. Also incomplete. 2021 NAVI was elite, and ZywOo’s 2019–2020 Vitality sides were nowhere near as stacked as the later roster. He still won Player of the Year twice. Rotterdam 2026 is useful here: the medal left his hands, which is what a real superteam looks like, and the Major MVPs did not.
CS:GO and CS2 as separate sports. The pro game moved from first to 16 to first to 13. Economy, utility, feel, and the map pool all moved. One tidy answer is: s1mple is the GOAT of CS:GO, ZywOo is the GOAT of CS2. That is clean. It is also an evasion, because the actual argument is about the first name in the series as it stands today.
donk. In 2024 donk took Player of the Year, and in more than a few samples his raw numbers were more violent than ZywOo’s. If someone defines GOAT as “highest mechanical ceiling,” the debate becomes a three-man field. The point here is narrower: ZywOo’s edge is that he stacked a near-top ceiling with the best stability and the most meaningful hardware.
4. Verdict: ahead on the record, not beyond argument
Back to the headline.
If GOAT is an auditable ledger — Player of the Year counts, Majors and Major MVPs, event MVPs, and dominance that survived a version change — then by 27 September 2026 ZywOo has already passed s1mple. That is not a projection. Four No. 1s, three Majors, three Major MVPs, 33 HLTV MVPs. Each line favors the same player.
If GOAT is “who most completely redefined the ceiling of the game on a given night,” s1mple is still on the shrine. 2018. The perfect Major in 2021. The rounds that became skins and wall art. That is cultural memory. A spreadsheet does not overwrite it.
The precise version of the answer:
- GOAT of the CS:GO era: most rigorous accounts still write s1mple.
- Best player of the CS2 era: the debate is already thin. It is ZywOo.
- Across 2016 to 2026 as one history: ZywOo now has the stronger claim, and the claim gets stronger every time he lifts another trophy. Unless s1mple finds another genuine contention cycle, the gap will keep widening.
ZywOo is 25 and still contracted to Vitality. s1mple is 28 until 2 October 2026. The aim is still there. The stage is smaller. Time is not neutral.
The word “already” in the title can stand, with one clause attached:
On résumé and longevity, ZywOo is now the most complete answer the sport has. On myth and peak nights, s1mple is still the name a lot of people will not cross out.
GOAT arguments do not end because a column says so. They end when one player makes the numbers so heavy that the story can no longer rescue the other side. In 2026, ZywOo is doing that work. s1mple has not yet delivered the reply.
Until then, putting both names in the same table is more honest than deleting either one from the history.
Where the counts come from
Award totals, ratings, and Major MVPs below are HLTV’s, dated through 27 September 2026. The next medal moves the table.
- Top 20 players of 2025: ZywOo (1) — four No. 1 seasons; eight MVPs in 2025, all at Big Events; first back-to-back Major MVP since coldzera in 2016.
- 30th MVP at PGL Cluj-Napoca — the ladder that day: ZywOo 30 (23 Big Events), s1mple 21 (14), device 19 (11).
- 31st at IEM Rio and 32nd at BLAST Rivals Season 1. StarSeries Fall on 20 September 2026 is the medal that takes the running total to 33 and 26 Big Events.
- ropz, BLAST Open Rotterdam MVP — first Vitality MVP that was not ZywOo.
- Head-to-head: IEM Krakow, IEM Atlanta. Cologne: m0NESY’s Major MVP.
- The 5 October 2023 post is s1mple’s own, quoted by contemporary reports: wait three months, don’t play “this shit game” until the updates. Direct duel splits (7-3, 5-5) come from match coverage of those two series, not from a separate HLTV duel table.
