What is StatTrak™?
In Counter-Strike 2, StatTrak™ is a special attribute that can be attached to weapon skins and knives. When a weapon has StatTrak, it features a small, orange digital LED counter attached to the side of the gun. For knives, the number of kills is physically scratched into the blade.
The sole purpose of StatTrak is to track the number of confirmed kills you get with that specific weapon skin in official matchmaking and community servers.
- Note: Kills against bots do not count towards your StatTrak counter.
How Do You Get StatTrak Skins?
StatTrak skins cannot be obtained through standard weekly in-game drops. They can only be acquired via three methods:
- Unboxing Cases: When you open a weapon case, there is a 10% chance that the item you receive will be the StatTrak variant.
- Trade-Up Contracts: If you use 10 StatTrak skins in a Trade-Up Contract, the resulting upgraded skin will also be guaranteed to have StatTrak. (You cannot mix normal and StatTrak skins in a contract).
- Purchasing/Trading: Buying them directly from the Steam Market or a trusted third-party marketplace.
Does StatTrak Affect Gameplay?
No. Just like normal skins, StatTrak is purely cosmetic. It does not provide any gameplay advantage, accuracy boost, or damage increase. It is simply a way to flex your experience and dedication to a specific weapon.
The StatTrak Swap Tool
A common question is: "If I buy a new StatTrak AK-47, do I lose all my kills from my old StatTrak AK-47?"
The answer used to be yes, but Valve introduced the StatTrak Swap Tool. You can purchase this tool for a few cents on the Steam Market. It allows you to take the kill count from one StatTrak weapon and transfer it to another StatTrak weapon of the exact same type (e.g., from an AK-47 to another AK-47).
Once swapped, the old weapon's counter resets to zero.
- Important: If you sell or trade a StatTrak skin to another player, the counter automatically resets to zero. You cannot buy a skin with 10,000 kills already on it.
Are StatTrak Skins Worth the Premium?
Because they drop at a 1/10th rate compared to normal skins, StatTrak variants are inherently much rarer. Consequently, they command a price premium.
- For Cheap Skins: The premium is usually negligible. A normal Mil-Spec skin might be $1.00, while the StatTrak version is $2.50.
- For High-Tier Skins: The premium can be massive. A Factory New Covert skin might cost $500, but its StatTrak Factory New counterpart could cost $1,200 or more.
- For Knives: StatTrak knives are actually highly debated. Some players dislike StatTrak on knives because the scratched numbers can ruin the clean aesthetic of the blade, especially on rare patterns like Fade or Doppler. Check out the Best CS2 Knives to see how the patterns look.
The Verdict: If you are buying a "play skin"—a skin you plan to use for thousands of hours—spending the extra money for StatTrak is incredibly rewarding. Seeing that number climb into the thousands is a great badge of honor. If you are just buying skins to trade or as an investment, standard skins are often more liquid and easier to sell.
