Organizing the Chaos
There are over 1,000 unique weapon skins in Counter-Strike 2. To keep things organized, Valve groups these skins into specific "Collections" and "Cases."
Understanding the difference between a Collection and a Case is vital for knowing how to acquire specific skins and how the Trade-Up Contract system works.
1. Weapon Cases
A Weapon Case is a locked loot box that requires a "Key" (purchased from the in-game store for $2.49 USD) to open.
- How you get them: Cases are dropped randomly to players as part of their Weekly Care Package.
- What's inside: Each case contains a specific set of community-created skins, ranging from Mil-Spec (Blue) to Covert (Red).
- The Rare Special Item: Instead of a weapon skin, you have a 0.26% chance to unbox a "Rare Special Item"—which is either a Knife or a pair of Gloves. The specific type of knife or glove depends entirely on which case you open.
- Examples: The Kilowatt Case, The Dreams & Nightmares Case, The Revolution Case.

2. Map Collections
Map Collections are groups of skins created directly by Valve (not the community). They are themed around specific maps in the game.
- How you get them: Historically, these dropped randomly as end-of-match rewards. In CS2, they are occasionally available as choices in the Weekly Care Package.
- What's inside: They mostly contain Consumer (White) and Industrial (Light Blue) grade skins. Very rarely, they contain higher tiers.
- No Knives: Map collections do not contain Knives or Gloves. The highest possible tier is usually Restricted (Purple) or Classified (Pink).
- Examples: The Dust 2 Collection, The Mirage Collection, The Italy Collection.
3. Operation Collections
Operation Collections are a special type of Map Collection introduced during massive, limited-time in-game events called "Operations."
- How you get them: During an Operation, players earn "Stars" by completing missions. These stars can be spent in the Operation Shop to receive a random skin from these specific collections.
- Why they are important: Once the Operation ends, these collections are removed from the store and never drop again. This hard-caps their supply. Some of the Most Expensive Skins in CS2, like the (The Norse Collection) or the AK-47 | Wild Lotus (The St. Marc Collection), come from Operation Collections.
Why Collections Matter: The Trade-Up Contract
The collection a skin belongs to dictates how Trade-Up Contracts work.
If you put ten Mil-Spec (Blue) skins into a Trade-Up Contract, you will receive one Restricted (Purple) skin. But which one?
The output is determined by the collections of the input skins.
- If you put in 10 skins from the Kilowatt Case, you have a 100% chance to get a Restricted skin from the Kilowatt Case.
- If you put in 5 skins from the Kilowatt Case and 5 skins from the Revolution Case, you have a 50/50 chance of getting a skin from either collection.
Summary
- Cases: Require a $2.49 key. Community-made skins. Can drop Knives/Gloves.
- Map Collections: Free weekly drops. Valve-made skins. Mostly low-tier.
- Operation Collections: Limited-time event drops. Discontinued. High investment value.
